Using codon usage to predict genes origin: is the Escherichia coli outer membrane a patchwork of products from different genomes?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Analysis of the codon usage of genes coding for the structural components of the outer membrane in Escherichia coli, is consistent with the requirement for high expression of these genes. Because porins (which constitute the major protein component of the outer membrane), and LPS (which constitute the major outermost constituent of the outer membrane), are synthesized from genes displaying widely different codon usage, it is possible to investigate the origin of the outer membrane. The analysis predicts that the outer membrane might originate from a genome other than the genome coding for the major part of the cell. Such a special origin would explain in structural terms, the likely lethality of porins if they were inadvertently inserted within the inner membrane, giving rise to the Gram-negative bacterial type, having an envelope comprising two membranes, instead of a single cytoplasmic membrane and a murein sacculus.

Acquired Antimicrobial Resistance Genes of Escherichia coli Obtained from Nigeria: In silico Genome Analysis
Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a global problem with enormous public health and economic impact. This study was carried out to get an overview of acquired antimicrobial resistance gene sequences in the genomes of Escherichia coli isolated from different food sources and the environment in Nigeria. Methods: To determine the acquired antimicrobial-resistant genes prevalence, genome asse...
متن کاملSDS-PAGE Analysis of the Outer Membrane Proteins of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Isolated from Patients in Different Wards of Nemazee Hospital, Shiraz, Iran
Background: Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) constitute the main structure and about half of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria. The OMPs of Escherichia coli (E. coli) play an important role in its drug resistance. Previous studies have shown that the OMPs of E. coli enhance its pathogenic effects by helping the bacterium to evade the immune defense and promote its adsorption to host cells. ...
متن کاملAnalysis of codon usage patterns of bacterial genomes using the self-organizing map.
Codon usage varies both between organisms and between different genes in the same organism. This observation has been used as a basis for earlier work in identifying highly expressed and horizontally transferred genes in Escherichia coli. In this work, we applied Kohonen's self-organizing map to analysis of the codon usage pattern of the Escherichia coli, Aquifex aeolicus, Archaeoglobus fulgidu...
متن کاملMolecular investigation of the prevalence and detection of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli isolated from traditional cheese in Iran
Introduction: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are one of the main causes of food poisoning and diseases such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Food contamination mainly occurs through food of animal origin such as meat and dairy products. The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence and distribution of virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolate...
متن کاملImmunogenicity of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli outer membrane vesicles encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles
Objective(s): Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is an important cause of diarrheal disease in humans, particularly in children under 5 years and travelers in developing countries. To our knowledge, no vaccine is licensed yet to protect against ETEC infection. Like many Gram-negative pathogens, ETEC can secrete outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). These structures contain various immunogenic vi...
